Roseboro and Garland selected as NC STEP Participants

Two Sampson County municipalities, Garland and Roseboro, have been selected as NC Small Towns Economic Prosperity Program participants of the NC Rural Economic Development Center. NC STEP focuses on helping small towns overcome adversity by building on assets to reinvigorate their economies. Towns are chosen on economic need, capacity to grown, and commitment.

NC STEP has three primary goals:
1. Support economic development in small towns adversely affected by economy or
    recent natural disaster.
2. Implement a comprehensive model of technical assistance and grant making to aid in
    revitalization efforts.
3. Provide information vital to the development of public policies that support long term

NC STEP incorporates four elements in helping towns achieve a new course:
1. Coaching: A community coach works closely with each town to provide guidance and
recommendations, but each town determines its own course of action.
2. Training: Leadership training such as skill-building workshops and information sharing.
3. Planning: The planning process seeks the active participation of all elements of the community
    in developing an economic strategy.
4. Grants: Planning and implementation grants give NC STEP communities a jump-start
in carrying our their economic development strategy.

Garland town leaders and volunteers have identified several areas in which they believe they can help Garland improve, including the attraction of more small business and the beautification of their hometown.

Roseboro already benefits from engaged, energetic citizenry, such as a newly formed Main Street Committee and the newly formed Roseboro Area Economic Development. As a part of the NC STEP, the town will focus on capitalizing on the talents and capabilities of the citizens.

A total of 67 communities have joined the NC STEP program since its origin. New towns are selected for the program in even-numbered years.
